The bride, 28, is a staff writer and editor at Scholastic News, a magazine in Manhattan. She graduated from New York University. She is the daughter of Camille Marino and Daniel M. Marino of Brooklyn. Her mother is the office manager for Dr. Pritpal S. Kang, a Brooklyn cardiologist. The bridegroom, 34, is a history instructor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, from which he graduated. He served in Iraq as an armor officer from October 2004 to June 2005 and was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He has a master’s in United States history from Stanford.He is a son of William E. Walters of Grand Rapids, Mich., and the late Emiko N. Walters. His father retired from the Air Force as a chief master sergeant and was last stationed at the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado Springs. Ms. Marino and Major Walters first made contact in February 2005. At the time, he was a captain commanding an Army company in Iraq and she was writing for a children’s magazine in Manhattan. She was assigned an article about the Web site AnySoldier.com, through which people can send care packages to troops overseas. After writing the article, she randomly selected one unit from a list of hundreds on the site and sent that unit a package. It was received by the unit’s first sergeant, who promptly e-mailed Ms. Marino to thank her and then passed her e-mail address to Major Walters.“My first sergeant knew that eventually, my next assignment would be here at West Point,” Major Walters said. “So he turned to me and said: ‘I got this package from a girl in New York who sounds really nice. Aren’t you going to New York?’
