For Darren Haber and Elaine Schmidt, the setting was a surprise helicopter ride over Los Angeles. They wore headsets to communicate and to protect their ears from the noise. As the chopper flew over the Hollywood sign, Mr. Haber passed Ms. Schmidt two sheets of folded paper. The first said “Will U” and the second said “Marry me?” She nodded in shock, regained her composure, then — pushing the intercom button —said “yes.”
Moe Tarkinow waited for Susan Mendik’s 60th birthday celebration, a dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. While Ms. Mendik had the restaurant print the names of each guest at the birthday party on sets of chopsticks, Mr. Tarkinow secretly had a pair made with the name Suzy Tarkinow. When he stood up and very publicly presented the chopsticks to her, “the place erupted and I was in total shock,” the bride remembered.
Eric Epstein asked Rebecca Ingis to marry him in a most lyrical way. He had brought her back to Northwestern University, where they had met, for what she thought was a reunion and jam session with Mr. Epstein’s school rock band, the Rocket Pockets. Ms. Ingis noticed the student lounge was full of candles and flowers. Mr. Epstein grabbed a microphone.
“As soon as I heard the chords of ‘I’m Yours’ by Jason Mraz, I realized that Eric was proposing,” Ms. Ingis recalled. “I started shaking, and of course, I said ‘yes.’
